Mealtimes can feel overwhelming when you’re supporting a child with fussy eating.
It’s easy to feel pressure for your child to eat, but mealtimes don’t need to be battles.
These strategies are designed to help you take the pressure off, reduce stress for both you and your child, and create a calmer, more positive environment around food.
The 10 Strategies:
1. Remember that food exposure doesn’t always mean eating. Simply having a new food on the plate, or even at the table, counts as positive progress.
2. Celebrate small steps. Smelling, touching, licking, or even just looking at a new food can be an important milestone.
3. Keep safe foods available. Ensure your child has their safe or ‘green’ foods at every meal so they feel secure and have something to eat.
4. Avoid pressure. Phrases like “just one bite” or “you’re not leaving until…” can increase anxiety. Gentle encouragement works better.
5. Model calm curiosity. Show interest in foods yourself without pushing your child to copy.
6. Stick to a routine. Regular meal and snack times help children feel secure and prevent grazing.
7. Keep mealtimes short and positive. Aim for around 20–30 minutes. End on a positive note, even if little was eaten.
8. Focus on connection, not consumption. Use mealtime for conversation, fun, and family bonding.
9. Introduce new foods gradually. Offer tiny amounts alongside safe foods without expectation.
10. Praise effort, not outcome. Highlight bravery for trying, touching, or even sitting calmly with a food. Final Thoughts Mealtimes are about more than just what gets eaten. By taking the pressure off and creating a safe, calm space, you help your child build trust with food at their own pace. Progress may feel slow, but every small step forward is meaningful.
